Fast forward twenty years on, and it’s also very comforting to see that these qualities haven’t diminished, either - even if some flaws prevent it from coming away with a completely clean bill of health. It helped that the game still retained much of the comedy of its predecessor, as well as the addictive, fast-paced strategy element. Over four million copies were eventually sold worldwide - no mean feat for such a niche change of theme (pun maybe intended).

Theme Hospital was released in 1997 for both the PC and original Playstation, to the kind of acclaim and sales that the company had grown used to by this point. But, in hindsight, a pretty sound one, too.īullfrog’s decision to step away from the candy floss and coasters of the first game and into scalpels and surgery certainly didn’t do its coffers any harm. So what did Bullfrog do instead? Naturally, they took the same mechanics of their original, and centered them around building hospitals instead. Any kind of follow-up would be sure to continue in that vein, you might think - just add better graphics and another instant hit beckons. As the pioneering title that founded the amusement park management genre, it got everything right - its simplicity to pick up and learn, its surprising depth and its droll sense of humour all combined to keep me coming back again and again to its funfair of delights. For me though, it was 1994’s Theme Park that topped them all.

Their legacy - and what a legacy it is - speaks for itself with no extra brevity needed. When it comes to considering the all-time classic strategy games of yesteryear, it would be criminal to overlook the works of a certain company by the name of Bullfrog Productions. And if there’s one team we know that can pull off such a feat-it’s Two Point Studios. With the right attitude, the possibilities are endless. Cities, resorts, an entire countryside-you name it. With something as accessable as a plot of land, nearly anything can be taken under the wing. But that isn’t to say the team are incapable of branching out into even bigger worlds. So far, Two Point has only really narrowed its focus on relatively small stages. And, you know, that sort of proves that the idea behind it is both profitable and popular. The fact both have been able to stay afloat with an almost identical structure for so many years just goes to show the sturdiness of the island lifestyle. Tropico and Civilization are both reliable alternatives when it comes to massive construction simulation games. Sound interesting? It’s a challenge we’d definitely onboard, that’s for sure. And then, of course, there are the pools, the restaurants, the tennis courts, and everything else one could possibly fathom when it comes to a lavish retreat. Unfortunately for you, you haven’t quite erected the tower-let alone the rooms to accommodate the guests and their needs. You’ve got a few hundred guests lining up to get a foot in the door, and your trusty bellhop is desperate to escort them to their rooms. Picture this: you’ve just established the lobby for your hotel. Even if it’s built around static homes and RV parks-we will happily take whatever we can get, so long as it’s Two Point pulling the strings, that is. Of course, that’s more the reason for Two Point to make amends for their previous errors by acting on the concept now. Hotel Giant, perhaps, though nothing that ventured into Bullfrog’s pockets. You know, it’s funny, because I for one can’t remember that many genuinely good simulation games based around hotels.
